What size boiler do I need?

What size boiler do I need?

How do I choose the right size boiler for my home?

When considering buying a new boiler, it is important to choose the correct size boiler for you and your property. We take a number of factors into account when sizing up a new boiler installation. The main considerations for a new boiler is, testing the in coming cold water main, and the amount of radiators in the property. It is also important to take into consideration, if you are planning on extending the property, and adding any additional radiators or bathrooms.

How do we work the size of boiler required?

The size of boiler needed for your property are dependant on many factors, including:

  • The number of radiators on the system - As a rough guide if you allow 1.5kw per radiator. Then multiply by the amount of radiators on the system. e.g 1.5kw multiplied by 12 (radiators) = 18kw required for the central heating.
  • Size of the property - If the property has a larger footprint then it will take more heating than a smaller property, the boiler then doesn't need to work as hard.
  • Number of bathrooms - This will be dependant on the system you have installed. Properties with more than one bathroom will require a bigger boiler.
  • How water usage - If you have more than one bathroom, and have a bigger demand for hot water during peak times e.g shower/bath/heating
  • How many floors in the property - Most properties have 2 floors, but larger properties may have 3 or 4 floors, in-which, consideration is needed  for the circulation of water.

What happens if the wrong sized boiler is installed?

The boiler will still function, but will not be as efficient as a correctly sized boiler would. It may take longer for radiators to warm up or some radiators may only be Luke-warm. It can cause the boiler to work at maximum rate, which can dramatically reduce the life span of the boiler.
